Christian Urbita débute des études scientifiques en physique, chimie, technologie à l’Université Paul Sabatier de Toulouse. Passionné de musique, de dessin et de sculpture, il part en 1975 en Allemagne pour apprendre la lutherie auprès du maitre luthier Bernhard Franke à Stuttgart. Parallèlement à cet apprentissage, il suit un enseignement théorique à l’école de Mittenwald en Bavière. Il continue son « tour d’Europe » à Lübeck chez le maitre luthier Rudolf Masurat. En 1980, il rejoint le célèbre atelier anglais W.E.Hill and Sons où il se perfectionne dans la restauration et le réglage des grands instruments italiens des XVII et XVIII siècles (Amati, Stradivarius, Guarnerius ...). C’est là qu’il comprend le fonctionnement acoustique de ces instruments exceptionnels et qu’il s’en imprègne.
En 1984, il fonde son atelier à Cordes sur Ciel, berceau de sa famille, afin de se consacrer à la fabrication. Durant cette même période, la direction du festival «Musique sur Ciel» et la création de l’Atelier Européen de Luthiers et d’Archetiers lui permettent de mieux répondre aux attentes des musiciens. Sa conception du violon est ainsi née de l’échange fructueux avec les compositeurs accueillis en résidence au festival Musique sur Ciel; Olivier Greif, Henri Dutilleux, Philippe Hersant, Gyorgy Kurtag, Thierry Eschaich, Thomas Adès, Chritian Lauba, Michaël Levinas et les solistes Augustin Dumay, Renaud Capuçon, Laurent Korcia, Sarah Nemtanu, Julien Chauvin, Matthew Trusler.
«Le contact avec les compositeurs et les interprètes est essentiel afin de concevoir un instrument de facture contemporaine qui s’inscrit dans la durée et dépasse la simple innovation esthétique et ainsi créer le violon du XXI siècle pour les musiciens d’aujourd’hui, inspiré par les grands maitres du passé».
En 1997, il reçoit le prix Musicora et en 2009 dépose auprès de l’INPI un nouveau modèle de chevalet. Actuellement, il se consacre uniquement à la fabrication de violons. Ses instruments sont recherchés pour leur sonorité.
Christian Urbita studied science (physics, chemistry and technology) at the University Paul Sabatier in Toulouse. His long-standing passion for music, drawing and sculpture led him to Stuttgart where he began an apprenticeship in 1975 with Bernhard Franke, master Violinmaker, at the same time attending theory classes at the Mittenwald School in Bavaria (Germany). He continued his “European Tour” in Lübeck with master Rudolf Masurat, violinmaker. In 1980, he moved to England to join the celebrated workshop of W.E.Hill and Sons, where he gained rich experience in the restoration and the adjustment of old Italian instruments from the 17th and 18th centuries (Amati, Stradivarius, Guarnerius etc.) and became familiar with the acoustic principles of these exceptional instruments.
In 1984, he opened his own workshop in Cordes-sur-Ciel, the birth place of his family, in order to focus on the making of new instruments. During this period, he took over the running of the festival “Musique sur Ciel” and created the “Atelier Européen de Luthiers et d’Archetiers” (European Association of Violin and Bow makers) which gave him a better understanding of the musicians expectations. A new conception in the making of a violin was born, thanks to a productive interchange with the composers in residence during the festival “Musique sur Ciel”; Olivier Greif, Henri Dutilleux, Philippe Hersant, Gyorgy Kurtag, Thierry Eschaich, Thomas Adès, Chritian Lauba, Michaël Levinas and performers such as Augustin Dumay, Renaud Capuçon, Laurent Korcia, Sarah Nemtanu, Julien Chauvin, Matthew Trusler.

In 1997, he received the “Musicora Prize” and in 2009, he patented with INPI (French institute of Patents) a new bridge model. Nowadays, he devotes all his time to the making of violins. His instruments are much sought after for their sonority.
